Set your standard and stick to it

There is something powerful in loving yourself. When you've taken that downtime (from relationships) to understand what makes you laugh, what gives you joy and what invigorates and revitalizes you, then it is easier for you to identify if the individuals you meet will add or take away value from your life. Also, you tend to not waste a lot of time believing in the potential of someone but seeing them for what they truly are. When you live a life of health and happiness, it is easier for you to i...

I Like You Trump

I like you Trump I don't care what anyone else says You are exactly what my people needed The harbinger of change, reawakening what appeared to be dead You see the Black community was asleep until you came along Content to live in mediocrity, happy to give their dollar to the 'Man' But you in your brash, uncensored and unsympathetic glory Did us a favour in more ways than one You reminded us that we were never accepted with open arms in your dying nation And if we were tolerated, it was only b...

Trip to Dorset

Talk about beautiful! This is Dorset, a beautiful county located along the coast in the UK. I spent my weekend there (as a treat to myself for my birthday) and even though it took me over 3 hours to get there, it was well worth it! I can't take full credit for having the imagination to embark on this trip because it was really organised through my company. So the invite went out and over 10 of us responded, many of whom traveled right after work. However, the real fun started on Saturday where w...

Radiate Windrush

I went to this event on Saturday 23rd June and it was based at Crystal Palace Park. I can't remember how I came across it but I was keen to attend given the recent scandal about the Windrush generation in the UK who the government had no problems in unceremoniously casting out of Britain (on the premise of them not having valid citizenship) even though, many of them left family and friends behind (years ago) to answer the call to rebuild this country. Fortunately, that day wasn't about focusing ...

Black Market Festival 2018

Well, as a follow up to the Goddess event, I decided to also attend The Black Market & Film Festival which took place last Saturday. As always, the black entrepreneurs in our community showed up in full force and I did walk away with quite a few lovely items. ...

Krav Maga RELOADED

Time goes by so quickly! Who would have thought that since the time I last posted about Krav Maga, a month would have come and gone! However, it's been quite an interesting and thoroughly enjoyable month. The class boasts of people (mainly men lol) from all ages and backgrounds but one thing we do have in common is the fact that we absolutely LOVE our training sessions. ...

You Are Not Responsible For What Someone Else Did

"Who told you it was your fault? Who said you were responsible for their actions? How ironic that they should do it Yet you should bare the shame And when you break your silence You are also to blame That‘s what pain does Like an infection, it craves another host body that will nourish it then pass it on But what if I told you the cure wasn‘t in pills  The comfort wasn‘t in sex And the freedom wasn‘t in drugs? You see pain often likes to join forces with fear So why not weaken the p...

Purposefully Broken for Greatness

Now this post is significantly different from the ones I usually do but it is definitely worth sharing. As I continue to network and go to inspiring events, I inevitably come across incredible individuals within the Black community who never cease to amaze me. One such person is Tamar Nwafor. Although I didn't have the privilege of attending the event detailed in the poster above, I was lucky enough to meet her at another event and she left a lasting impression on me. She is a wonderful exa...

Spain - Madrid & Cordoba

I have traveled to Spain several times and absolutely love the country! I think it's because the weather reminds me so much of the Caribbean. However, I would be lying if I said that I didn't encounter some hostility on more than one occasion.  I was ignored in a haberdashery shop in Cordoba once. I was also insulted behind my back (quite literally, a couple stood behind my back and hurled insults at me in Spanish) because in the crowd, I made the mistake to block their view in my innocent ...

XI'AN - CHINA

I visited Xi'an back in 2012 and spent an entire year immersed in the culture and the environment so that I could enhance my Chinese language skills. This language element formed part of my 4-year Bachelors degree at the time. Xi'an is not like the cosmopolitan cities of Beijing and Shanghai where you have a large English expatriate population and all the mod cons that you are likely to see in the Western world. However, the population is just as big and the pollution is just as alarming.  ...

PORTUGAL

I went to this hostel in Portugal back in February 2018 and it was superb from start to finish. The airport pick up was arranged and professionally handled by Andre Mota Figueiredo who so happens to be a relative to the owner of the hostel. He runs a small transport company called Bespoke Tours and his contact details are as follows:  Phone: +351 915 100 838Email: amotafigueiredo@bespoketourspt.com His English is impeccable and he is extremely courteous. He also doesn't ...

Krav Maga

Alright, it's been 2 weeks since I started this training and all I can say is.......IT'S A WORKOUT! The upfront payment is a bit pricey but for the life skills, calibre of training and personal equipment that you get, it quickly becomes apparent that it's good value for money. It is a close contact, reality-based, self-defence training regimen and is not unknown to the police and military force. However, because of the nature of it, I have to make sure that I have my gum shield, groin guard, shi...

You Better Act Right

Understand that it is okay to give your love interest second chances and to fight to keep the relationship going. However, when the relationship is only ever about second chances, constant apologies and a routine cycle of disappointments, in time the relationship becomes tiring and all you have to show for it is frustration, doubt and insecurity. Never regret the time spent making it work but never forget that there was life before them and there will certainly be life after them. This world is ...

[Single Life Adventures] Nebula Sister Spiritual Cleansing Weekend

Through the Goddess event, I managed to learn about this cleansing weekend and decided that it sounded too good to miss. It was going to be hosted by a Black Goddess, the turnout would be all Black women and it would focus on reconnecting with our African ancestral rituals so that we could spiritually cleanse and be reinvigorated. Even though I hesitated about confirming this booking, I knew that the higher powers would not allow me to miss out on this opportunity. However, as if my curiosity wa...

[Single Life Adventures] Goddess Event 2018

I went to an incredible event earlier in March called the Goddess Event and was blown away by the sisterhood and support among the attendees as well as the incredible talent, resourcefulness and creativity of the entrepreneurs. As a testament to this, the picture at the start of this blog is the handiwork of the talented Goddess, Merissa Hylton, who also painted live throughout the duration of the event. Her website is merissahylton.com and she can also be found on Instagram via @merissahyltonar...

[Single Life Adventures] Benicassim Festival (Spain) - Rototom!

Rototom!!!!!! It was a wonderful festival and an extremely thrilling experience. Brace yourselves - there are many pictures and loads of videos to watch as I slowly unfold the wonders of this very popular and highly entertaining event.  Now in keeping with my objective to try new things and have new experiences, one of the many great ideas I had was to attend a festival. Luck would have it that while I was talking about this with some Spanish friends, they suggested I attend Rototom which s...

Why People Don't Take You Seriously

There is the old proverb 'actions speak louder than words' and that remains true to this day. As you embark on your journey of self-discovery, learn to use less words and to do a lot more. Challenge yourself to become the person you've always dreamt of being. Develop self-respect and self-esteem which do so much to determine your quality of interaction with others. Prove to yourself that your fears are simply that and your dreams are not impossible. Learn to be happy in who you are. That way y...

Make Your Actions Do The Talking

We've focused a lot on love but we haven't explored the other aspect of living life single and that's learning to create a full and wholesome life while on your own. If you've been known to procrastinate, avoid challenges, rush headlong into situations etc., and you believe it's time to make a change, there is no better time than the present. Learning something new about yourself by pushing your limits and doing what you've never done before will help you to appreciate that a lot of your obstacl...

People of Worth

To insist on being like everyone else and to go as far as to dress like them, speak like them or behave like them may make it easier to blend in. However, this comes at the cost of being labelled a dime a dozen and becoming nothing more than a poor carbon copy of others. We women have two choices in this world. We either learn to step into our own power by embracing our individuality or we focus on appearances and invest more time in looks rather than strength of character. What many fail to r...

Start Learning The Lessons

They say that unlike the school curriculum, life has a tendency to make you experience a situation first, then teach you the lessons afterwards. Regardless of if you agree with this logic, the fact still remains that there is always a lesson in everything that we do. There is always an opportunity to learn more about yourself in every experience that you have. We tend to look at what the other person could have done to make a situation better when we are just as responsible for what happens base...

How To Have A Happy Ever After

No matter what people say or how much things change, one thing remains unchangeable and that's the nature of true love. There is no formula for getting it right and there are no guarantees offered upfront. What is certain is the fact that sex is never the way to someone's heart. A connection is what you need with the other individual. That's the only thing that will survive life's struggles, the ups and downs, those times when you can't see eye to eye and the ravages of time on the body and even...

Marriage

Let's say that you insist on settling down with someone. He has to be the one because you've been waiting for far too long and been hurt long enough so you at least deserve for him to be THE ONE. Ok......so it will be easy for you to answer the following questions then: - Do they challenge you to be better? Are they willing to risk an argument with you just so you know the truth and for you to start doing more to improve? - Do they encourage you even when there is every reason in the world to...

What You Fail To Do For Her......

Throughout your journey - single or taken, dating or unavailable, celibate or not - do not devalue yourself or trivialize your worth. Always be aware that whether or not you get the outcome you expect from your relationship, there is still a very big world out there and you DO NOT have to settle for less if you don't want to. The problem isn't finding better, it's having the patience to allow time to do the work for you. Remind yourself that you deserve to be happy then be the happiness and lov...

A Woman's Intuition

We women were blessed with something called 'intuition' which helps with self-preservation and also reinforces our protective instincts once we settle down and start a family. This same intuition is just as important once we get to the stage of wanting to find our life partners. However, somewhere along the line, we tend to ignore it. We ignore that gut feeling that something isn't right about a certain guy. We go blind to the red flags that appear occasionally during our interactions or we simp...
